What to expect before your first visit
Everything you need to know before scheduling. No surprises.
Your first appointment: 60 minutes
The initial evaluation is 60 minutes. That’s intentional—it’s enough time to actually understand your history, your current situation, and what you’re looking for.
The visit covers your psychiatric and medical history, prior treatments and how they worked (or didn’t), current concerns, and your goals. At the end, you’ll have a clear picture of the findings and what the recommended next steps are—and why.
No prescription will be written during the initial visit without a thorough evaluation first. That’s not how this practice works.
What to bring to your first visit
Having these ready will help us make the most of your time together:
- A list of current medications, doses, and how long you’ve been taking them
- Prior psychiatric diagnoses you’ve been given, even if you’re not sure they were accurate
- Any medications you’ve tried in the past and why you stopped
- A summary of any significant medical conditions or current medical care
- Insurance card and photo ID for intake purposes
- A quiet, private space for a video visit—good lighting and a stable internet connection
Before you schedule
Do you accept insurance?
The MindCounsel works with select insurance plans in California and Hawaiʻi. Specific plan participation is managed through our scheduling platform. Self-pay options are available. Contact us if you have questions about your specific plan before scheduling.
How does telehealth work?
All visits are conducted by secure video. You’ll receive a link prior to your appointment. No special software is required beyond a modern browser on a phone, tablet, or computer. A quiet, private space with a stable connection makes the biggest difference.
I’m currently on medication. Can I still schedule?
Yes. Many patients come having been on medication for some time. The initial evaluation will include a careful review of your current and prior treatments as part of the overall assessment.
Can I get a second opinion if I’m already in care elsewhere?
Yes. Second-opinion evaluations are a meaningful part of this practice’s focus. You don’t need to leave your current provider to get a second perspective.
What if I’m in crisis or need urgent care?
This practice is not set up to provide urgent or crisis care. If you are in crisis, please contact 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), go to your nearest emergency room, or call 911. Telehealth has real limitations in acute situations.
How long does it take to get an appointment?
Availability varies. The scheduling platform will show current openings. If there’s a wait, the contact page is the best way to reach out directly.
