What to expect before your first visit

Everything you need to know before scheduling. No surprises.

The Initial Visit

Your first appointment: 60 minutes

The initial evaluation is 60 minutes. That is intentional - it is enough time to actually understand your history, your current situation, and what you are looking for.

The visit covers your psychiatric and medical history, prior treatments and how they worked (or didn't), current concerns, and your goals. At the end, you'll have a clear picture of the findings and what the recommended next steps are - and why.

No prescription will be written during the initial visit without a thorough evaluation first. Treatment decisions are always made thoughtfully, based on a full understanding of your history and goals.

What to Have Ready

What to bring to your first visit

Having these ready will help us make the most of your time together:

  • A list of current medications, doses, and how long you've been taking them
  • Prior psychiatric diagnoses you've been given, even if you are not sure they were accurate
  • Any medications you've tried in the past and why you stopped
  • A summary of any significant medical conditions or current medical care
  • Insurance card and photo ID for intake purposes
  • A quiet, private space for a video visit - good lighting and a stable internet connection
Common Questions

Before you schedule

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. In California, scheduling is managed through Headway, which verifies your coverage automatically. Accepted plans include Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Anthem Blue Cross, and others - Headway confirms eligibility before anything is finalized.

In Hawaiʻi, The MindCounsel is in-network with HMSA PPO (commercial plans), HMSA QUEST Integration (Med-QUEST/Medicaid), and AlohaCare QUEST. Self-pay is also available. If you are unsure whether your plan qualifies, reach out before scheduling - we'll help you confirm eligibility.

How does telehealth work?

All visits are conducted by secure video. You'll receive a link prior to your appointment. No special software is required beyond a modern browser on a phone, tablet, or computer. A quiet, private space with a stable connection makes the biggest difference.

I'm currently on medication. Can I still schedule?

Yes. Many patients come having been on medication for some time. The initial evaluation will include a careful review of your current and prior treatments as part of the overall assessment.

Can I get a second opinion if I'm already in care elsewhere?

Yes. Second-opinion evaluations are a meaningful part of this practice's focus. You do not need to leave your current provider to get a second perspective.

What if I'm in crisis or need urgent care?

This practice is not set up to provide urgent or crisis care. If you are in crisis, please contact 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), go to your nearest emergency room, or call 911.

How long does it take to get an appointment?

Availability varies. The scheduling platform will show current openings. If you have questions, the contact page is the best way to reach out directly.
