Adult Autism, ADHD & Neurodivergence

Clinical evaluation and diagnostic clarification for autistic traits, ADHD, and neurodivergence in adults — with formal testing coordinated when it is needed.

Who this is for

Adults asking whether they might be autistic, ADHD, or both

A growing number of adults reach midlife sensing that an earlier explanation — or no explanation at all — never captured how their mind actually works. Some were diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety, or depression but still feel that something fundamental was missed. Others have always felt different, have worked hard to mask it, and are now exhausted by the effort.

This evaluation is for adults exploring autistic traits, ADHD, or broader neurodivergence — including those identified late, those whose presentation does not match childhood stereotypes, and those whose existing diagnosis does not fully explain their experience.

The overlap

Autism and ADHD overlap far more than people expect

Autistic traits and ADHD share a great deal: difficulty with attention and executive function, sensory sensitivity, social fatigue, and challenges with routine and transitions. They co-occur frequently, and one can mask the other — an articulate, high-achieving adult may have neither recognized until burnout makes the underlying load visible.

Adult presentations also differ from the familiar childhood picture. Masking, compensation, and a lifetime of adaptation mean that traits are often subtle on the surface, which is part of why so many adults — especially women and those who learned early to camouflage — reach adulthood unidentified. Sorting out which traits are present, and how they interact, is a core part of diagnostic clarification.

Scope

What this evaluation can — and cannot — do

This is a clinical psychiatric evaluation. It can take a thorough developmental and longitudinal history, apply validated screening tools, distinguish ADHD from autistic traits where they are being confused, identify co-occurring conditions, and produce a clear formulation and plan.

Formal, standardized autism diagnostic testing — such as structured observational assessment — is often best completed through specialized neuropsychological evaluation. Where that level of testing is indicated, it is coordinated and referred rather than improvised, so you receive the right assessment from the right source.

The process

A developmental and longitudinal evaluation

The evaluation looks across your whole life rather than a single moment: early development and history, the trajectory of attention and executive function, sensory and social experience, and the points where masking or burnout became costly. Validated measures are used where appropriate, and co-occurring mental health conditions are reviewed rather than overlooked.

You leave with a plainly-explained formulation of what fits, what does not, what remains uncertain, and a clear path forward — which may include treating a co-occurring condition such as ADHD, anxiety, or depression, pursuing further assessment, or coordinating support and accommodations.

Approach

A neurodivergence-affirming perspective

The aim is not to “fix” a way of being, but to understand it accurately and support it well. That means treating co-occurring conditions where they cause real difficulty, identifying accommodations that reduce daily friction, and approaching neurodivergence as a difference to be understood rather than a deficit to be corrected. Frequently asked

Common questions

Can you formally diagnose autism in adults?

This is a clinical evaluation that clarifies the picture, screens for autistic traits, and distinguishes them from ADHD and other conditions. When formal standardized diagnostic testing is indicated, it is coordinated through specialized neuropsychological assessment so you receive the appropriate evaluation.

I was diagnosed with ADHD — could I also be autistic?

Yes. Autism and ADHD co-occur frequently, and one can mask the other. Clarifying which traits are present, and how they interact, is a central purpose of this evaluation.

Do you work with late-identified or self-identifying adults?

Yes. Many adults reach this question later in life, often after years of masking. The evaluation is affirming and takes self-understanding seriously as part of the history.

Is there a medication for autism?

No medication treats core autistic traits. Where co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, or depression are present and causing difficulty, those can be treated — thoughtfully and with a clear rationale.

Is this available by telehealth in both states?

Yes. The evaluation is conducted by secure video for adults in California and Hawaiʻi, with in-person visits available in Honolulu when appropriate.
