Psychiatric Consultation Services
For therapists, psychologists, primary care, and nurse practitioners who want a psychiatric partner for complex cases — formal consultation, diagnostic clarification, and medication strategy, with communication that keeps you at the center of the patient's care.
What consultation covers
Consultation is for the cases that do not resolve with a standard referral: diagnostic disagreement, partial treatment response, complex polypharmacy, or a high-stakes decision where a second psychiatric perspective is valuable. We review the available history, offer a formulation, and lay out options with the reasoning behind each.
Who we work with
We partner with therapists, psychologists, primary care providers, and nurse practitioners across California and Hawaiʻi.
The consultation process
It begins with a focused intake of the question and the relevant records (with patient consent). We then provide a written or live formulation — what we think is going on, what we would rule in or out, and the treatment options ranked by evidence, risk, and fit. You retain clinical responsibility for your patient; we provide the psychiatric thinking.
Communication standards
Consultation output is written to be used — clear, specific, and free of jargon where plain language will do. We are explicit about uncertainty and about what additional information would change the recommendation.
Shared-care philosophy
Good consultation makes the referring clinician more capable, not more dependent. Our measure of success is that you finish the case understanding it better than when you started.
Frequently asked questions
Who is consultation for?
Therapists, psychologists, primary care providers, nurse practitioners, and organizations needing a psychiatric perspective on complex or high-stakes cases.
Do you take clinical responsibility for the patient?
No. In a consultation model the referring clinician retains responsibility; we provide the psychiatric formulation and options. Direct care is available separately by referral.
Is patient consent required?
Yes. Reviewing records and coordinating care requires the patient's written consent.
Is this available in both states?
Yes — California and Hawaiʻi, by secure video.
