Psychiatry Referrals That Make Your Day Easier
Primary care carries the front line of mental health. When a patient needs more than a first-line antidepressant or a question you do not have time to untangle, you want a psychiatric provider who responds quickly and reports back clearly.
When to refer
Common reasons primary care colleagues refer to The MindCounsel include partial or no response to one or two antidepressants, a stimulant or adult ADHD question that warrants a full evaluation, diagnostic uncertainty between depression, anxiety, ADHD, and bipolar spectrum, and patients on complex regimens who need medication reassessment.
What you get back
You will receive a concise, readable consult note with the working formulation, the medication plan and its rationale, and clear guidance on what you can continue to manage versus what we will follow. We aim to reduce, not add to, your administrative load.
Adult ADHD and controlled substances
For ADHD, we conduct a structured evaluation, check the prescription monitoring database, screen cardiovascular risk, and document the reasoning behind any stimulant decision. This gives you a defensible, well-documented basis for shared care if the patient ultimately returns to your panel.
How a referral works
Patients can book directly through Headway (California) or our Hawaiʻi scheduler, or your office can send a secure referral. With consent, we coordinate records both directions. Telehealth across California and Hawaiʻi; most patients seen within one to two weeks.
Shared-care philosophy
We see ourselves as an extension of your team for the psychiatric piece — taking on the diagnostic and medication complexity, then handing back a clear plan. The patient stays anchored to your practice for their overall care.
