Adult ADHD Evaluation in California
A thorough, unhurried assessment that looks at the whole picture — because adult ADHD is frequently missed, and just as frequently confused with something else.
What a comprehensive ADHD evaluation involves
Adult ADHD is a clinical diagnosis, not a checkbox. A careful evaluation reviews your developmental and personal history, the way attention and organization have affected you over time and across settings, your medical background, and anything that has already been tried. Validated rating tools are used to add precision, but they are interpreted alongside your story rather than on their own.
The goal is a clear, well-reasoned understanding of what is going on — including whether ADHD is the best explanation, whether another condition fits better, or whether more than one is present.
- Full developmental and psychiatric history
- Symptom patterns across work, home, and relationships
- Review of medical contributors and prior treatment
- Validated measures interpreted in clinical context
- A formulation you can actually understand
Why ADHD is easy to mistake
Trouble focusing is the final common pathway of many conditions. Anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and thyroid issues can all look like ADHD, and ADHD often travels alongside them. This is why an evaluation that only counts symptoms can land on the wrong answer. You can read more in our articles on ADHD vs. anxiety, bipolar vs. ADHD, and depression and executive function.
Telepsychiatry is available to adults throughout California by secure video, including communities such as:
In-person visits are available in Los Angeles when appropriate.
An evaluation is a careful clinical assessment — not a guarantee of any particular outcome. It does not guarantee that a stimulant, or any specific medication, will be prescribed. Any treatment recommendation is individualized, made together with you, and based on a thorough understanding of your history and goals. When controlled medications are considered, they are managed responsibly and in line with professional and state guidelines.
Private, discreet care
Mental health care is personal, and many people prefer to keep it confidential. Telepsychiatry lets you meet from a private space of your choosing, without a waiting room and without traveling across the island. Your information is handled in accordance with applicable privacy laws, and visits take place over a secure, encrypted platform.
Using your insurance
In California, appointments are booked through Headway, which verifies your coverage automatically at the time of booking. Accepted plans include Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Anthem Blue Cross, Oscar, and others. Self-pay is also available. Because coverage, copays, and behavioral-health benefits vary from plan to plan, we encourage you to verify your specific benefits directly with your insurer before your first visit. Ask about coverage for outpatient psychiatry and telehealth, and about any copay, deductible, or referral requirements. Self-pay options are also available. Participation with a plan is not a guarantee of coverage for any individual service.
You can see more on the California psychiatry page, or verify your specific plan automatically when you book.
Common questions
How long does an ADHD evaluation take?
An initial evaluation is unhurried by design so there is time to take a proper history. The exact structure is reviewed with you when you schedule.
Will I be prescribed a stimulant?
Not automatically. An evaluation does not guarantee any particular medication. If medication is appropriate, the options — which may or may not include a stimulant — are discussed together and managed responsibly.
Can this be done by telehealth in California?
Yes. The evaluation can be completed by secure video anywhere in California, with in-person visits available in Honolulu when appropriate.
Do you treat adults only?
The practice serves adults. The right care for younger patients is best arranged with a provider who specializes in that age group.
